She has been with RTL Nieuws since 2002, serving in a variety of editorial leadership roles, including coordinator of the domestic news desk, chief editor of the Half Acht Nieuws, and deputy editor-in-chief. She initiated a news transformation program to help secure the future of the news organization. Openneer is also a board member of the Genootschap van Hoofdredacteuren and serves on the board of De Tegel, the annual Dutch journalism awards.
